Owning Your Journey: Navigate Your Career Transition with Confidence

I'm Nicole Clarke, a Fintech strategy and operations leader based in the Metro Detroit area. In April this year, I led a breakout session at the Shine & Rise Shine On Summit, and I'm excited to share some key points from my talk on navigating career transitions.

My Career Journey: From Finance to FinTech

At the beginning of my career, I started in consulting in NYC. I climbed the ladder at a Big 4 firm and even earned my Executive MBA from Columbia University. But after X years in an exciting but exhausting consulting career, I craved change. I moved to Detroit and looked for opportunities in a new industry. After searching for X time, I landed a remote operations role in Big Tech. I had great work-life balance and fulfilling work—I felt like I made it!

Nearly three years into my dream job, reality hit last year when I got laid off. Self-doubt crept in, and, for one of the first times in my career, I didn't know what the right next step was for me. After a period of self reflection and reconnecting with my network, I found a new, fulfilling role as a Senior Program Manager at a FinTech company.

I’m sharing some strategies that were vital for me in my career journey. 

Key Strategies for Owning Your Transition

1. Upskilling: Stay Relevant, Stay Ahead

The job market is dynamic. To stay relevant, continuous learning is key. Identify skill gaps for your desired path. Don't be intimidated by job descriptions! Tailor your resume to showcase relevant skills you've already used.

Luckily, there are many resources available today so consider: online courses (Coursera, Udemy), workshops, certifications, and even pursuing a new degree.

2. The Power of Networking: Build Bridges, Open Doors

Building professional relationships is critical. Attend industry events, join professional organizations (like Shine & Rise!), and leverage LinkedIn.

Networking is a two-way street. Be willing to help others, share expertise, and build genuine connections. Update your profile, share successes, and connect with others through articles and content.

Remember: Your network is a goldmine for referrals, which can significantly boost your application's visibility. Studies show referrals lead to nearly 45% of internal hires!

3. Conquering Self-Doubt: Believe in Yourself

Career transitions often involve self-doubt. It's normal! I questioned myself after my layoff. But, remember, self-doubt can be conquered.

Use positive affirmations, reflect on past achievements, seek support from mentors and loved ones. Their guidance can be invaluable.
